Genealogy and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Most people involved with genealogy have heard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly known as the Mormons. The LDS church is famous for its interest in genealogy and has invested large amounts of time and capital in pursuit of genealogical research. The world's largest genealogical library, the Family History Library, is owned by the LDS church and is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Members of the LDS church are strongly encouraged to discover who their ancestors are, or--in LDS lingo--to do their family history.

So why the big interest in genealogy? What are the Latter-day Saints doing with all that information?

For a century and a half, stories have been told about the Latter-day Saints and their search for ancestors; stories about what is done with all those names. This page is an attempt to explain why we Latter-day Saints do what we do with genealogy and to provide some resources for everyone interested in genealogy.

The following links are meant to explain and introduce various topics related to Latter-day Saints and genealogy.
